Over 4,000 acres of beach dunes, scrub dunes, fresh water marsh, salt water marsh, and Maritime forest make up the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge. This coastal Refuge provides refuge for the endangered loggerhead sea turtle, the endangered American alligator, and the rare gopher tortoise. It is part of the migration route of the monarch butterfly, and is also known for its more than 120 species of birds - making it a paradise for bird watchers. Along with birding, the refuge offers opportunities for hiking, swimming, photography, collecting sea shells, and boating. Fishermen enjoy both fresh and saltwater fishing. Weeks Bay wetlands are a magnet for wildlife and visitors. It is a small estuarine embayment off Mobile Bay comprised of approximately three square miles of open shallow water, averaging 4.5 feet deep. Forested wetlands form an extensive strip between floodplain swamps and upland forests. Weeks Bay is a critical nursery for fish, crustaceans, and shellfish. An interesting morning or afternoon can be spent visiting the estuary display center and strolling the Boardwalk through the wetlands. History Buffs We have real history. This is where the Spanish explorers hacked their way through dense oak under growth to build the first trails across our coastal plains. This is where the Indians massacred the whites and the whites massacred the Indians. This is where we built forts to protect our shorelines. This is where we have enshrined the battleship Alabama, a submarine, airplanes and an LST. This is where you can make a short excursion to the National Naval Aviation Museum at Pensacola Naval Station. Casino Trips - Charter buses leave daily for a day of fun, chance and excellent food for unbelievably low prices. All this happens in the Mississippi Gulf Coast City of Biloxi. It is only an hour and a half bus ride or drive to Biloxi from Magnolia Springs. It is an experience everyone should have at least once in a lifetime. The Five Rivers Estuarium The Five Rivers is an exciting educational facility highlighting the four key habitats of coastal Alabama: the Mobile Tensaw River Delta, Mobile Bay, the Barrier Islands and the Northern Gulf of Mexico. It includes the 10,000 square foot Exhibit Hall and Living Marsh Boardwalk. This facility is a showcase of the plants, animals, and other natural resources found in the Estuary and its surrounding marine habitats. Through beautiful visual exhibits and engaging interactive exhibits, the Estuarium will leave you with a broader understanding of the interactions that take place in Mobile Bay, the fourth largest estuary system in the United States. Pack for a Great Day Trip You could not plan a more interesting side trip than this: Start your day at Fort Morgan on the western tip of Pleasure Island, take the ferry from Fort Morgan to Dauphin Island where you will visit the Sea Lab, drive north toward Mobile, stop to eat and tour Bellingrath Gardens, then end your day at Battleship Parkway. Fort Morgan -- Was constructed from 1819-1834 as part of the defenses of Mobile Bay. Fort Morgan, like Fort Pickens at Pensacola, was designed by the French military engineer Simon Bernard, who had been hired by the United States as a consultant and appointed to the board of engineers. The early Third System fortifications show the influence of the French school of design, whose most notable member was Vauban. However, the primary mission of defending a harbor, rather than their own location, led to characteristics which make them a uniquely American type of fortification. Bellingrath Gardens -- The original 60 acres were purchased by Walter Bellingrath in 1917 upon the advice of his physician. Dr. P.D. McGehee advised his patient to learn how to play and told him to buy the fishing camp he had been admiring. The camp consisted of three dilapidated houses and an overgrown jungle; from this jungle has grown one of the Souths most beautiful floral gardens. Battleship Park -- At Mobile's Battleship Memorial Park, you don't have to look very far to find heroes. From the mighty USS ALABAMA to the Submarine USS DRUM , the spirit of military pride is alive and well. Take a voyage through time and revisit an era of adventure and bravery as yo...
